The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogudu-Okwor Ward, Oshiri Community in Onicha local government area of Ebonyi, has expressed worry over the alleged unlawful arrest of some chieftains of the party in the ward.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the party in a statement issued to reporters in Abakaliki on Wednesday accused the suspended National Vice Chairman, South East of the party, Mr Ali Odefa, of being responsible for the arrests.
Odefa was suspended by the executive members of the party in the ward for alleged anti-party activities on Oct. 3.
The embattled National Vice Chairman had described the suspension as null and void and called the Ward Executives “faceless people.’
Mr Herbert Ovuta, Acting Chairman of PDP in the ward alleged that Odefa “led thugs and people decked in unverified uniforms” and hounded the chieftains of the party in the ward on Oct. 7.
“The people arrested include Mr Obinna Chukwu, Acting Youth Leader of PDP, Ogudu Okwor Ward. Njoku Nwagu, Secretary.
“They were forcefully taken away in the presence of their distraught family members.
“After arresting the two-party officers in Oshiri, the team also moved to Abakaliki, where they arrested Mr Sunday Ogbonnaya Idika, Acting Organising Secretary,” he stated.
“We, therefore, use this medium to alert the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun that some of his officers and men in Ebonyi Command might have been compromised against members of our party to pervert the cause of justice.
“We want peace in our community and not violence,” he added.
All efforts to get the reactions of the Police Commissioner in the state, Mr Antonina Uche-Anya were not successful.
