The Blues forward felt the wrath of the home fans who booed him early on at the Etihad, but he soon silenced the Citizens supporters.

Sterling got his own back in the 42nd minute when he put the west London outfit 1-0 up after cutting inside Kyle Walker and providing a composed finish into the bottom right corner.

Guardiola, who managed Sterling at City for six years, was clearly unhappy with his side's defending as he showed his frustration in the dugout.

But Sterling won't mind as he fired the visitors into a deserved lead at the home of champions.

Chelsea have struggled for consistency this term and have found themselves stuck in mid-table for much of the campaign, with Sterling among those unable to find his form on a consistent basis.

However the 29-year-old's effort against his former club was his eighth of the season and a strike that could prove to be the catalyst in the final months of the season.
