There’s now some polling on Taylor Swift‘s impact on the 2024 presidential race and a conspiracy theory that has taken root on the right.
A Monmouth University poll released today showed that 18% believe that Swift is part of a covert government effort to help Joe Biden get elected this year. Almost half of respondents, or 46%, had heard of the premise, as the conspiracy theory took on new life in advance of the Super Bowl.
According to Monmouth, “Fully 71% of those who believe this identify with or lean toward the Republican Party and 83% indicate they are likely to support Donald Trump in the fall.”
Swift endorsed Biden in the 2020 election and was critical of Trump that year, so the idea that she would support the president again is not so far fetched. But the conspiracy theory is that she is some kind of secret operative working in Biden’s favor. After the Chiefs made it to the Super Bowl, the conspiracy theory expanded to the idea that the game was somehow rigged. The Chiefs won, and Biden’s team made light of the conspiracy theory in social media posts. “Just like we drew it up,” read a message on Biden’s X/Twitter account.
She has not endorsed this year, but she has encouraged her followers to register to vote. According to the poll, 68% of respondents were supportive of those get-out-the-vote efforts, which are a common way for celebrities to get involved in politics. Republicans were less supportive of Swift’s get-out-the-vote efforts than Democrats and independents.
The poll of 902 adults was over the phone and taken from Feb. 8 to 12. It has a margin of error of +/- 4.1%.
The poll also showed that 39% have a favorable opinion of Swift, 13% have an unfavorable opinion and 43% have no opinion.
