WWE boasts a number of highly popular properties, but one that doesn’t get much attention from the mainstream fanbase is WWE Champions. It’s essentially a WWE-themed mobile game with mechanics that resemble Candy Crush. However, one person who certainly enjoys it is YouTuber DarkSydePhil.
The official description for WWE Champions reads: “Play an immensely challenging World Wrestling Entertainment mobile game. In WWE Champions, enjoy action RPG and puzzle battles. Compete in contests based on NXT, Raw, Smackdown, and more. Collect over 250 Superstars including The Rock, Ronda Rousey, and Becky Lynch. Join over 35 million players and feel the excitement of the WWE Universe.” While this sounds exciting on paper, the game follows the familiar formula of gem-breaking games, with a gambling lootcrate card aspect, sharing the same basic mechanics with others in the genre.
Over the years, DSP has denied his involvement with WWE Champions, despite a clip surfacing where he admitted to playing it. However, he downplayed his commitment to the game, saying he played it “on and off casually” and had “lost interest in it, because it’s a gem breaker game.” Recently, though, it has been revealed that his involvement with the game was much deeper than he let on.
One particular incident saw DSP claiming he couldn’t afford a honeymoon with his wife, stating that he didn’t have the funds to do nice things for his family. During this time, he also repeatedly denied spending large sums on WWE Champions. This theme became common in his streams, with DSP maintaining that any accusations of overspending came from trolls attempting to derail him.
However, recent receipts have surfaced showing that an account linked to DSP on WWE Champions had spent tens of thousands of dollars on the game. The account was called “TheyCallMeDSP” but then changed to “DownFromTheRafters” after fans started their trolling. Despite his previous denials of spending $40k, and his claims that he couldn’t pay his bills or taxes—leading to him asking his fans for financial help during livestreams—the evidence tells a different story. The revelations have sparked widespread ridicule across the internet.
Dozens of YouTubers within the gaming community have since released videos discussing DSP’s excessive spending on WWE Champions. He has recently admitted that he still plays the game, but he has continued to deny how much he’s spending, claiming that he hasn’t spent more than $1,000 on the game over the years.
DarkSydePhil has built a reputation as a YouTuber and content creator known for his struggles in video games and his defensive reactions to in-game failures. Though he claims to be a former professional fighting game player, his performances in games like Dark Souls and various fighting titles have often been lackluster, drawing attention for all the wrong reasons. What separates DSP from other players isn’t just his skill level, but his tendency to blame external factors—such as game mechanics or faulty equipment—when things don’t go his way. This habit has earned him a reputation for being salty. Additionally, his personal life has frequently been scrutinized, adding another layer to his complicated online persona.
This isn’t the first time DSP has found himself under fire either; he’s faced criticism for past controversies, including instances where he’s been caught in lies or, infamously, not realizing his webcam was on during a private moment.
While WWE Champions may appear to be a fun mobile game, it’s difficult to justify the kind of money DSP has allegedly spent on it. For perspective, WWE 2K24 with all its DLC costs only around $120. Clearly, WWE Champions remains successful for a reason, appealing to players who become hooked on its gameplay—though some may find themselves paying a steep price for that addiction.
