VAR has been more an issue this season than any other before with contentious decisions happening on almost weekly basis.

But the Premier League have now been given the green light for referees to explain VAR decisions to fans - during matches.

It is a drastic change to the current rules, but is set to have a major effect on supporters inside the stadium.

In years gone by, fans have been left largely in the dark over VAR decisions - especially ones that take a lengthy amount of time.

According to the Daily Mail, football lawmakers IFAB have allowed referees to offer explanations for in-match decisions after successful trials in Mexico and Portugal club matches.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb has been keen for more transparency with referees, including communication with fans in the ground.

Approval is still required from top-flight clubs with the final decision coming at the Premier League AGM in June.

Trials have taken place over the world after 12 months including club football in Mexico (Liga MX) and the Portuguese League Cup, which went ahead this month.

English referees have also used the new system when Anthony Taylor did so at the Club World Cup 12 months ago in Morocco.

The trial was then extended to the men's Under-20 World Cup, as well as the women's World Cup last summer, where fans from this country might have likely seen the new system in place for the first time.

During the women's World Cup in Australia, referees were mic'd up when they went over to the VAR pitchside monitor.

After watching replays in an incident, the referee would then come back onto the pitch and announce the decision made to the fans present at the stadium.

The trials so far have seen referees make simple explanations of their decisions, including straightforward decisions such as penalties.

But it has removed plenty of confusion around stadiums, shared by fans since VAR has been implemented.
