Confirmed

Former Manchester United and Arsenal forward Robin van Persie has been appointed the new manager of Feyenoord.

The 41-year-old, who won the Premier League title with United in 2013, has signed a deal to take charge of the Dutch club until 2027.

He leaves Heerenveen, who are currently ninth in the Eredivisie, after taking seven victories from his 23 games in charge.

Van Persie began his playing career with Feyenoord before moving to Arsenal in 2004 and then to Old Trafford eight years later. A move to Fenerbahce followed and he returned to Feyenoord in 2018, retiring a year later.

"Everyone knows how special my bond with Feyenoord is," said Van Persie.

"I am enormously looking forward, together with a strong staff, to working with the player group at 1908 (the club's training ground) and then in De Kuip (the stadium), supported by the Legion (fans), playing matches and achieving successes together."

Feyenoord are third in the Eredivisie, 11 points behind leaders Ajax. They will play Inter Milan in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Pep's fury

Pep Guardiola was lost for words when told of Jamie Carragher's thoughts on Erling Haaland's absence against Real Madrid in midweek.

Manchester City's top scorer did not get off the bench as the Premier League champions crashed out of the Champions League at the Bernabeu Stadium on Wednesday, having been troubled by a knee injury.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher, now a prominent TV pundit, suggested the Norway international had not wanted to come up against Real centre-back Antonio Rudiger, saying he could have "Rudiger-itis".

The German had enjoyed notable success against Haaland in the past.

City manager Guardiola had not been aware of Carragher's comments until they were raised towards the end of his press conference to preview Sunday's Premier League game against Liverpool.

The Spaniard reacted with surprise and disbelief.

"Oh God, did Jamie Carragher say that? Oh God," Guardiola said before turning away and pausing for a few moments.

"I don't laugh. I don't know why it'd be that suspicious. Do you think Erling Haaland didn't want to play that game?"

There was then another long pause as Guardiola looked down at his desk and shook his head.

When prompted for a further comment, he said: "It's not true. It was crazy to play the game. He had a problem in his knee and he could not play."

Arsenal title hopes over

Arsenal have been told any hope of them winning the Premier League title are over.

The Gunners could be 11 points off Liverpool by the end of Sunday, should Arne Slot's side beat Man City.

Mikel Arteta saw his team lose 1-0 to West Ham at home on Saturday.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Rory Jennings said: “Today is the final nail in the coffin. I can’t believe they’ve lost at home to a Graham Potter team.

“You can’t get launched out of the title race by Graham Potter at your own stadium.

“There’s something symbolic it being Potter. He’s such an underwhelming, non-winning manager that has totally ended your chance of winning domestic silverware this season.

“If you’re an Arsenal fan you have to be livid with that. I think Arteta has done a remarkable job there, but this is unacceptable."

Long time coming

Marcus Rashford put in an excellent display for Aston Villa.

The Manchester United loanee was brought on for the second half in their win over Chelsea and made a huge impact.

Rashford assisted both of Marco Asensio's goals that completed the comeback at Villa Park.

It's the first time in five years that the 27-year-old has assisted two goals in a Premier League match.

He last did so for United in their 3-0 win against Sheffield United in June 2020.

Blues

Enzo Maresca believes Chelsea's defeat to Aston Villa is the 'toughest' of their season.

The Blues have now lost seven matches in the Premier League despite taking the lead at Villa Park.

Chelsea have won just two of their last ten league outings and lost five of them, with Maresca feeling the pain of their latest slip.

Speaking afterwards, he said: "This is probably for me personally the toughest defeat of the season.

"The reaction from Brighton was brilliant, the performance was really good but the result was not enough.

"You need to be clinical. The difference is inside of the box."

'This result is really big'

Graham Potter has been left delighted with West Ham's win at Arsenal.

It's a result that has seen them steer 13 points clear of the bottom three after a winless run of four matches in the Premier League.

The Hammers fought hard to hold onto their lead during the second half and boss Potter is confident they can push on from it.

"Jarrod [Bowen] and Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] and Mo [Kudus] give us a counter-attacking threat," he told Match of the Day.

"We defended with discipline and resilience but we carry an attacking threat as well. The win brings confidence and belief.

"This result is really big for us and hopefully, it allows us to move forward in a positive way."

Aston Villa 2-1 Chelsea

It’s full-time at Villa Park and Aston Villa have won it.

Enzo Fernandez gave Chelsea the lead after nine minutes.

However, two goals from Marco Asensio turned it around for Villa to win all three points.

Chelsea have now lost three of their last four Premier League matches and are losing pace in the race for top four.

Villa are a point behind them in seventh and only two points adrift of fourth-place Manchester City.

The second half will commence shortly and it's Chelsea who have the advantage.

Enzo Fernandez was in the right place at the right time to put the Blues in front from Pedro Neto's cross.

Aston Villa have had chances to equalise but Filip Jorgensen and his Blues defence have remained resilient.

Marcus Rashford has been warming up during the break and will replace Jacob Ramsey for the second half.

Arsenal agony

Mikel Arteta has spoken on his frustration at Arsenal's home defeat to West Ham.

Jarrod Bowen scored the only goal in a 1-0 win for the Hammers, who inflicted the Gunners' third league defeat of the season.

Myles Lewis-Skelly's red card left Arsenal with a one-man disadvantage and they have failed to close the gap on Liverpool.

"We lacked a lot of good decisions time after time to be a real threat and put West Ham under the ropes," he told talkSPORT.

On the Lewis-Skelly red card, he added: "I haven't seen the action again.

"The decision was made, they looked at it and I prefer to look at ourselves."

Hammer blow

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge has taken a huge hit.

Jarrod Bowen's first half goal for West Ham was enough for them to win all three points.

The Gunners went down to ten men after Myles Lewis-Skelly's red card for a foul on Mohammed Kudus.

Arsenal battled for a late equaliser but have fallen to a third league loss of the season.

It leaves them eight points behind leaders Liverpool, who will go 11 points clear if they beat Manchester City on Sunday.
