Barcelona could be in for a profit soon as a report from Mundo Deportivo claims that PSV Eindhoven are very happy with Sergino Dest’s performances, and are already considering triggering his €10 million purchase option.

The American right-back moved to Barcelona from Ajax under Ronald Koeman in 2020 for €21 million. He was the only signing requested by the Dutch manager at the time, but the move never quite worked out at the Camp Nou.

Dest played 30 games during his first season, scoring two goals and assisting one. Under Xavi, however, his prominence decreased rapidly.

While the Spanish coach used him as a right-winger at times, it seemed his mind was made up about the 23-year-old, and there was little to no way he could cut into the team.

After which, Dest joined AC Milan on loan for a season, but failed to impress Stefano Pioli, and eventually returned after just eight appearances in the league that entire season.

Things have been looking up for him since, especially after his move to PSV in the summer. Largely deployed as a left-back, Dest has a goal and four assists to his name in the league, and also put in a few impressive shifts in the Champions League.

The Eredivisie leaders are very happy his progress and are ready to integrate him as part of the squad permanently as early as this summer. His purchase option stands at €10 million.

Is a Barcelona return on the cards at all?

Dest recently spoke about his potential return to Barcelona, though, saying, “Xavi is still there. So not for the moment; it will be too difficult.”

The two evidently did not share a strong relationship as the American right-back believed that he deserved more chances in the team than he got.

Now, however, Xavi is set to to leave the club at the end of the season and Dest is coming off an impressive season in the Dutch league. Is there a door open for him at Barcelona?

Well, it seems difficult.

Barcelona want to sign Joao Cancelo permanently at the end of the summer, who will end up costing them at least €20-25 million. Julian Araujo is also having a superb season with Las Palmas, and has a shout to be a part of the first-team in the summer.

With those two in the squad, plus Jules Kounde, who could continue to be an option at right-back if he is not sold, it seems borderline impossible for Dest to break into the Barça setup.
