The Barcelona vs Real Madrid rivalry is still the most coveted in world football, even if it is without the superstars it once boasted of across the last decade.
Sergio Ramos vs Gerard Pique was as spicy as it could get, while the midfield dominance of Xavi, Sergio Busquets, and Andres Iniesta at one point, and then Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric also added fuel to the fire.
That said, none of these were better than the obvious Lionel Messi vs Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry. The two truly brought out the best in each other, and in turn, their teams, which made El Clasico an absolute spectacle.
Following their respective departures, several Real Madrid players have opened up about their affection for Messi, and how highly they they think of the Argentine. Casemiro, Sergio Ramos, and Marcelo are three of the names that have spoken in top regard about him.
And now, current Madrid vice-captain Daniel Carvajal has had his say on the legendary debate, as well. He has, however, given an understandably diplomatic answer.
“Messi or Ronaldo? I put them on the same level. I don’t prefer one over the other. They are monsters in every sense of the word, and I could not choose neither this, nor that. I think they are very different,” he said speaking to Daniel Habif.
“Messi is a player who is able to go back, receive the ball, and create attacks, and then he an participate in the play and create.
“Cristiano is a monster at scoring goals, attacking the area, and finishing. If they were playing together, they would have been a bomb. And it would have been interesting to see,” Carvajal concluded.
