Today was looking tasty for Spanish football fans as Girona made the trip to Real Madrid hoping to trump them at the top of the table.
Sitting just two points adrift, the Catalans were hopeful about their chances, especially with all four Madrid first-team centre-backs out injured.
Unfortunately for them, and Barcelona, Carlo Ancelotti’s side did not miss a beat, and looked thrice as better as Girona, absolutely dominating them at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Vinicius Jr and Jude Bellingham ran the show, with the former scoring a sensational goal from outside the box to open the scoring and then adding two assists to his tally, while the latter was on target twice before getting subbed off.
Madrid eventually ran with the game, winning 4-0, with Girona barely making a dent to their makeshift backline.
During the game, another thing stood out, though, as the Real Madrid faithful started chants mocking Barcelona during the latter half of the game, shouting “Xavi stay, Xavi stay!”
Barcelona have been far from their best this season, to be fair, especially after the expectations Xavi and co. set last season, especially defensively, breaking decade-long records.
They are currently sitting third in La Liga, a mammoth 11 points adrift of Madrid, and six below Girona. They do have the chance to gain three points on this difference tomorrow as they host Granada at the Olympic Saint Montjuic.
Interestingly, though, it seems Real Madrid fans have the memory of a goldfish, as Xavi led Barcelona to the league title last season, winning it by ten points.
And if not for a topsy-turvy end to the season, when the Catalans lost three of their last five games after rotating the team massively, the difference could have been much wider.
