Vince McMahon used to rule WWE with an iron fist and was responsible for introducing quite a few changes in the business. He certainly had a method to his madness and now the reason behind his introducing the term “WWE Universe” has been revealed.
While speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, JBL explained that Vince McMahon introduced the term “WWE Universe” to show respect to the fans and make them feel like an important part of the show.
Vince McMahon wanted to avoid simply calling them “fans,” as he believed that term didn’t fully capture their role. Instead, he aimed to give them a special name that showed their connection to the product and emphasized that they were more than just spectators.
According to JBL, McMahon wanted the audience to feel like they were part of the experience and the performance. He believed that, when done right, fans are an essential part of the show. This mindset led to the creation of the term “WWE Universe” to recognize their importance and unique place in the WWE.
“Vince was huge about respecting the fans, but he didn’t want to call them that. That’s why he came up with the term ‘WWE Universe.’ Vince wanted to give them a special name because they were part of the show—they were part of us.
It wasn’t like, ‘Hey, here come our fans. They’re going to pay a fee, and because of that, we’re going to balance a ball on our nose and perform.’ It wasn’t about doing whatever we wanted while they just watched. Vince wanted the fans to feel like they were part of the show, which they were. When done right, fans are a key part of the show. That’s why he came up with the term ‘WWE Universe.'”
Vince McMahon was well known to be particular about the verbiage used on WWE television, and so it comes as no surprise McMahon came up with the term “WWE Universe.” McMahon ultimately wanted to benefit WWE no matter what, and so it’s understandable why he introduced such terms.
