According to Mundo Deportivo, contrary to recent media reports, Atletico Madrid will not cover most of Clement Lenglet’s salary. Instead, they will only be responsible for paying €3 million plus an additional €1 million in bonuses.

Lenglet is expected to complete a medical examination with Atletico Madrid on Saturday, before officially signing a contract for a one-year loan deal.

Despite claims suggesting that Atletico would bear the majority of the French defender’s salary, sources from the club have denied this.

They have clarified that their financial commitment is limited to the €3 million mentioned, plus the potential €1 million in bonuses. This amount accounts for both the loan fee and the portion of the salary that Atletico Madrid will cover.

Background of Lenglet’s salary

It is said that Atletico see value in acquiring Lenglet because he is an experienced player who knows La Liga well.

With a solid background playing for prominent teams, Lenglet fits the club’s current financial situation, particularly considering the salary cap limitations they are facing.

The club believes there are few better options available at a similar cost, making this loan a reasonable decision.

It is important to note that Lenglet’s gross salary would be approximately €16 million per season (around €8 million net).

However, due to the extension of his contract from two to three years, the total amount of €32 million gross (or €16 million net) is now spread across three seasons.

This adjustment means Lenglet’s new salary stands at around €10.6 million gross per season, translating to about €5.3 million net per year.

In summary, while initial reports suggested that Atletico Madrid would take on a significant portion of Lenglet’s wages, the reality is that their financial commitment is far less than expected.

With a limited financial outlay and the need to manage their salary cap effectively, Atletico Madrid views this loan deal as a balanced approach to strengthening their squad with a player who already has a good understanding of La Liga.
