Roberta Flack has sadly passed away. The legendary vocalist, known for classics like “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” has died at the age of 88, according to a statement from her rep. A cause of death was not given. Keep reading to find out more… “We are heartbroken that the glorious Roberta Flack passed away this morning, February 24, 2025,” the statement reads, via Variety. “She died peacefully surrounded by her family. Roberta broke boundaries and records. She was also a proud educator.” The singer and pianist found fame when Clint Eastwood used her song “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” in his 1971 directorial debut Play Misty for Me, followed by 1973’s “Killing Me Softly.” Both songs won Record of the Year at the Grammys, resulting in back-to-back wins, which hadn’t been repeated until U2 between 2001 and 20002. She also achieved further fame with 1974′s hit “Where Is the Love.” In total, she scored six Top 10 pop hits and 10 Top 10 R&B singles. Her last album, Let It Be Roberta, was released in 2012. She received her last Grammy nomination in 1995, for best traditional pop vocal performance, for Roberta. She was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and her legacy has lived on: The Fugees’ popular 1996 cover, featuring vocals by Lauryn Hill, was also a No. 1 R&B hit.
