At the AEW World’s End pay-per-view, Samoa Joe defeated MJF to win the AEW World Heavyweight Championship. He has been holding on to the title for the past three months. He is set to defend his title against Swerve Strickland at AEW Dynasty.

Recently, AEW World Champion Samoa Joe told Renee Paquette that his legacy is directly linked to him holding the championship.

“I think it’s [Samoa Joe’s legacy in this industry] very much linked to this championship. And I think it’s very much linked to how I carry it and who I defend it against. I mean, these are no new concepts by any stretch of the imagination. But, I think when I set out and started my career, I wanted to define myself as somebody who’d take on anything, any situation, any challenge, overcome it, and conquer it. And that became an obsession and it’s still an obsession to this day. As long as I am alive and kicking in an AEW ring, I’ll be holding this championship, and if I’m not then I’ll be pursuing it. And that’s always been my goals, and they’re pretty simple. They will always be my goals.

“With no pun intended, it [holding the AEW World Championship] means the world to me. To come out and compete. Especially in a company like AEW with the caliber of talent that we have to be the World Champion here. To hold the highest honor and to be the standard bearer. Something that I very much cherish and enjoy, and it feels right. There’s a reason why I’m here. Whether it be through all the preparation through my own machination. But one way or another, I’m the champion and it’s a wonderful feeling,” Samoa Joe said.
