The continuity of Joao Cancelo is one of the objectives set by the Barcelona sporting management for the upcoming summer.
The Portuguese full-back, on loan from Manchester City, is an undisputed starter for the Blaugrana and his versatility has been key to the team’s success.
There are no doubts about wanting to keep him at the club on the Catalans’ part, while the player himself wishes to continue. But the operation could become very complicated.
Saudi Arabian club enter the picture
However, Barcelona’s pursuit of Cancelo’s continued stay at the club could face a serious challenge from Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal, reports SPORT.
The interest from Saudi Arabia tempts Manchester City, who are in favour of a permanent sale of Cancelo, while Barça would only be looking for another loan deal.
It must be remembered that the Premier League club were in talks with Saudi as well as Arsenal over Cancelo’s sale last summer as well. Ultimately, though, the player’s will to join the Blaugrana played a key role.
Now, Manchester City are again aware of the interest in the player in Arabia and, specifically, in Al Hilal.
The Middle Eastern club could bid for the player with an offer that would be unattainable for Barça. And everything will depend on the will of the player because the economic proposal that could be put on the table from them could be enormous.
Cancelo’s desire the key?
Joao Cancelo has always expressed that he is comfortable at Barcelona and his desire is to stay at the Blaugrana club, although he will have to push for his continuity to be a fact.
Barça have contacted his agent, Jorge Mendes, to try to mediate between them and Manchester City.
It is going to be very difficult for the Catalans to pay a transfer this summer, and they want to extend the loan for another year with a purchase option. The valuation made by City and Barça is very far apart so the agreement would not be easy.
Manchester City will maintain a very tough stance in the negotiations and as such, Cancelo will hold the key to decide his next move.
