Shabana Azmi, a legendary figure in the Indian film industry, has significantly contributed to its rich history over the decades, participating in numerous projects, including several international ones. Despite her ongoing work in Bollywood, Azmi offers a unique perspective on both the positive and negative aspects of the industry.

Shabana Azmi on actor’s high entourage cost

In a recent interview with the Hindustan Times, Azmi discussed the notable changes she has observed in the film industry, particularly the extensive entourages that now accompany celebrities. She contrasted this with the past, explaining how things were different when she started her career.

Azmi highlighted the escalating costs of film shoots and pointed out that, unlike in Hollywood, Indian producers have minimal control over who is included in an actor’s crew. “In Hollywood, I have never seen anything like this except for personal trainers. The main dress designer, hairdresser, and makeup artist are all appointed by the producer’s team,” she stated. Reflecting on her early career in the 1970s and 1980s, the National Award-winning actress recalled having just a three-member team consisting of a hairdresser, a makeup artist, and a driver.

In the case of low-budget films, Azmi often had to manage with minimal assistance. “I used my own clothes, used the unit’s hair and makeup person, and always stayed in the same hotel as the unit,” the 73-year-old actress reminisced.

She also shared a nostalgic memory from shooting the 1983 film Mandi. Despite being provided with separate cars, Azmi and her co-star Smita Patil chose to travel by bus with the other actors, enjoying the camaraderie, singing, and playing games. Azmi even recalled buying an air ticket for her director, who was traveling by train, showcasing her generous spirit.

Shabana Azmi’s career

Azmi’s illustrious career includes memorable films like Ankur, Swami, Arth, Khandhar, and Paar. Recently, in 2023, she appeared in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani opposite Dharmendra, and in R. Balki’s sports drama film Ghoomer, alongside Abhishek Bachchan, Saiyami Kher, and Angad Bedi.

Shabana Azmi’s reflections not only shed light on the evolving dynamics of the film industry but also underscore her adaptability and dedication to her craft, making her an enduring icon in Indian cinema.
