Though Toranaga does not control the wind, Hiroyuki Sanada, the actor that plays him in Shōgun, holds the forecast for the series’ Season 2 in the palm of his hand.

Speaking with Deadline along with series creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks backstage Friday at the Critics Choice Awards, where the historical drama series sliced its way to a leading four wins, Sanada, who won tonight for Best Actor in a Drama Series, teased his desires for Season 2.

“In Season 1, [Toranaga] didn’t become a Shōgun yet. So, I’d like to see him become the leader of Japan. That is my hope.”

The show, based on James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name and set in 1600s feudal Japan, follows Lord Yoshii Toranaga’s fight against his enemies on the Council of Regents. His plans for unyielding power is complicated by the arrival of John Blackthrone (Cosmo Jarvis), a shipwrecked English pilot who claims to hold secrets that could change the tides in Toranaga’s favor. The two men convene through their translator Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a disgraced noblewoman determined to prove her loyalty and strategic prowess.

Renewed for Season 2 and Season 3 but with no set release date on the horizon, Marks shared what audiences can expect.

“We’re coming out of the writers room now. We’re also done with the 10 episodes and we have our finale now. That’s allowing us to start figuring out how we’re going to shoot this. But we’re very excited about the plan,” he said. “I think the thing to take away, more than anything, is how, I hope people are going to be surprised with some of the big ideas as soon as the first episode of part two. So, we’ll start there and see where it takes us for future stories. But we’re really excited about it, especially for [Hiroyuki Sanada].”

in addition to Sanada’s win, Shōgun tonight walked away with victories in Drama Series, Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
