Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix joined FC Barcelona late on the summer transfer deadline day, arriving on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, respectively.
The signing of the Portuguese duo was seen as a big coup in Catalonia, more so considering that they had pulled it off despite the financial situation at the club being in a worrisome state.
And, the impact that the pair made early in the season immediately sparked talks of a permanent move for both Cancelo and Felix.
Since then, though, there has been some skepticism growing, as Manchester City’s demands for Cancelo could become an issue while doubts have been sown over Felix due to his inconsistency issues popping up again.
Jorge Mendes confirms Barcelona’s plans
However, superagent Jorge Mendes, who represents both Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix, has confirmed that Barcelona indeed intend to make their signings permanent.
Mendes played an integral role in helping Barça land the Portuguese duo in the summer transfer window and has confirmed that the Catalans want to retain both players beyond the current season.
As quoted by Fabrizio Romano, Mendes said: “Barcelona want to keep both João Félix and João Cancelo beyond this season, they want to make the deals permanent.”
When asked about the criticism that has been directed at Joao Felix after some of his recent displays, Mendes insisted that the forward had been doing very well so far at Barcelona.
“His performances have been very good so far,” stated Mendes.
While the idea may be to sign both Cancelo and Felix permanently, the deals will, in the end, be dictated by Barcelona’s financial situation and the fee demands that Man City and Atletico Madrid make for the pair.
In the case of Felix, another loan deal could be considered, but Man City are unlikely to be open to such an operation with Cancelo.
