Swedish midfielder explains his decision to reject Barcelona for Tottenham: “It was 50/50”

Barcelona were recently in an open transfer race for the signing of 18-year-old Swedish midfield talent Lucas Bergvall. He had made waves across the top European teams this season because of his performances with Djurgardens, where he has played 25 games already.

Barcelona were leading the race for the Swede for several weeks, and had almost completed his signing for an offer worth €10 million, including add-ons.

The likes of Eintracht Frankfurt, PSG, and a certain Tottenham Hotspur were also seriously interested in his services. But the teenager had seemingly chosen the Catalan capital as his next destination.

However, after everything went through, Spurs seemingly improved their offer for Bergvall, offering him a spot in their first-team, as opposed to Barcelona, who would send him to Barça Atletic initially. Be

Bergvall understandably accepted Spurs’ offer, and is set to join them in the summer.

“They are both incredible clubs,” he said, explaining his decision, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

“It was a very difficult choice, it was 50/50. It felt like the next step for me was Tottenham. It was not easy to say no to Barça — it took a very long time to decide,” Bergvall added.

While Barcelona fans have the Johann Cruyff quotes locked and loaded, this is almost definitely the correct decision from Bergvall for his future.

Not only will he get first-team chances under one of the most exciting managers in European football, but he will also face much less pressure in London as opposed to Barcelona.

And while it may sound like sour grapes, Bergvall rejecting Barcelona has saved them a great deal of money and trouble.

For a club in financial disarray, the Catalans cannot justify spending €10 million on a position where they are sufficiently stacked. That too with youngsters, no less.

The pivot position, the left-wing, the right-back, and probably even the left-back position are in need of reinforcement before Barcelona can start focusing on central midfield.
