Newcastle United’s recent struggles saw them dumped out of the FA Cup at home to Brighton last weekend, ending a potential route to silverware for the Magpies.
Eddie Howe’s side do have a shot at a trophy on Sunday, March 16, when they meet Liverpool at Wembley, but will the Carabao Cup final distract the visitors in a game which could be crucial for their European hopes?

Handy timing can help Hammers to double
One of the few bright spots in Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham reign came at St James’ Park, as the Hammers won 2-0 in the reverse meeting earlier this season. Since then, Graham Potter’s arrival has improved West Ham’s fortunes, while the visitors have made a middling start to 2025.
West Ham head into this clash having won to nil against Arsenal and Leicester in their previous two games. The Hammers went into the weekend 16 points clear of the drop zone and they can further boost their points tally at the London Stadium.
Newcastle have won just four of their last nine matches while they have lost four of their previous six Premier League games. The visitors will surely have an eye on their Wembley trip just six days later, which makes the Hammers look like fantastic value at 21/10.
Bowen is pulling the strings for hosts
Jarrod Bowen has been impressive across a four-game stretch since returning from injury. He’s scored twice in that run, while he’s chalked up 1.2 Expected Assists.
Bowen is likely to be key to Potter’s plans this term and the England international has played as a striker in three of his four matches under the new manager. With the Hammers lacking depth in the final third, Bowen looks like their biggest attacking threat.
Bowen leads the side in shots on target this term despite his injury layoff and he had plenty of joy in the reverse meeting, as two of his four shots were on target. The Magpies are looking vulnerable at the back, so Bowen stands out at 7/4 given that he is West Ham’s go-to man in the final third.
Magpies’ midfielders are card targets
One of the most notable things about this Newcastle side is the number of fouls they draw in midfield. After 27 games this term the Magpies rank third in the Premier League for fouls won, which is largely down to their central midfielders.
Bruno Guimaraes leads the way having drawn 89 fouls this term, while Sandro Tonali and Joelinton feature in the team’s top four for fouls drawn. That could be an issue for the hosts, as their midfield isn’t known for its discipline.
Tomas Soucek and Edson Alvarez have been booked eight times apiece this season, while the pair lead the team in terms of fouls. Only Aston Villa (76) have seen more yellow cards for opponents than Newcastle’s 73 this season, while only six teams have picked up more bookings than the Hammers.
Back two of their most card-happy midfielders to have their names taken against this Newcastle side.
