At the 2024 AEW All In London pay-per-view, HOOK managed to reclaim the FTW Championship by forcing Chris Jericho to tap out. At the post-show Media Scrum, Sam Smith of Wrestlesphere mentioned that the FTW Title was first brought into AEW as a joke.
Tony Khan took issue with the “joke” part and said they’ve treated it as anything but a joke. Smith clarified that he meant the title was still not a sanctioned one, just like it was in ECW.
“I’m the reporter that asked the question about the FTW Championship and I would hate to see it get retired, @OfficialTAZ. I regret the word joke, I was trying to reference its origins as an unofficial belt in ECW & later AEW. In truth, I was trying to say how far it has come,” Wrestlesphere’s Sam Smith tweeted.
The creator of the FTW Championship, Taz, also responded to the comments. Taz also mentioned that ‘Joke’ was an inaccurate way to describe the FTW title. He also mentioned that Tony Khan explained it very well at the Media Scrum.
“People make mistakes, you said you miss spoke. Maybe you were nervous, shit happens no big deal & @TonyKhan broke it down perfectly in the scrum. “Joke” was a really inaccurate way to describe the FTW title in ECW & AEW. I’m sure u would agree, none of the FTW champions were or are jokes I can guarantee you that. Thanks for the support tho, I do appreciate that. ?,” Taz tweeted.
