Teddy Sheringham raises major doubts over Manchester United transfer target

Manchester United have been warned against making a move for Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

The Reds have been linked with several centre-backs this summer, including Jarrad Branthwaite, following the departure of Raphael Varane.

A deal to sign Branthwaite will be tricky to strike because Everton are pricing the 21-year-old out of a dream move.

As a result, United have turned their attention to Bayern Munich and Netherlands star De Ligt.

Former United striker Teddy Sheringham does not believe De Ligt is the right fit for United.

Speaking to Poker Sites, as quoted by Goal, Sheringham said: “I don’t know if Matthijs de Ligt would be a good addition to the United defence.

“I think United need some experience in their back line, ideally someone with Premier League experience. He’s obviously a very good player and we all remember him from his time at Ajax, but I don’t think he should be the number one priority at the moment for the club.”

Sheringham overlooks the fact that few managers know De Ligt as well as Ten Hag, who made him Ajax captain at a very young age.

In the famous 2018/19 season for the Eredivisie giants, De Ligt captained Ajax to a domestic double and almost reached the Champions League final before losing in the semi-finals to Tottenham.

Things haven’t gone to plan since De Ligt left Ajax.

He never settled properly at Juventus or Bayern Munich, but it sounds like Ten Hag is willing to take a risk with the Dutch defender.

De Ligt still has a high ceiling at the age of 24. It could be a great bit of business for the club.
