Except for a few guaranteed starters, many Barcelona players are anticipated to be on the chopping block this summer as the club grapples with financial frailties.
Leading the list of potential departures is Frenkie de Jong, who has a strong likelihood of leaving during the upcoming transfer window.
Not only does the Dutchman possess an abundance of suitors, but considering his contract has incremental raises, Frenkie’s salary for the upcoming season will increase substantially.
Interest from Manchester United looms large
Manchester United went after Frenkie de Jong in 2022, driven by the arrival of Erik Ten Hag, who was eager to reconnect with one of his former Ajax standouts.
While Frenkie refused to budge at the time, the Red Devils are expected to again be hot on the heels of the 26-year-old in the upcoming transfer window.
And an interesting quote by the Manchester United manager indicates the club will continue to keep their eyes peeled for the player.
When asked why Ten Hag hasn’t been able to replicate his Ajax style, he explained that he’s missing the right player profiles, specifically mentioning his former star, Frenkie de Jong.
“[De Jong] is a typical player you need to play the Ajax style!” he claimed (h/t TenHagEra)
Manchester United have endured a difficult season, but given their financial backing and long-standing interest in De Jong, a move for the midfielder cannot be ruled out.
However, the midfield maestro also has suitors in the form of Bayern Munich, which could potentially see a bidding war for him take place in the summer.
Contract renewal will be key
Although Barcelona and Xavi have constantly expressed their trust in De Jong, it will largely boil down to whether the player accepts a renewed contract with lower salary terms.
Indeed, Barcelona will be more than willing to listen to offers if the Dutch midfielder chooses not to renew.
Time will tell where Frenkie de Jong’s future lies, but Manchester United will certainly watch his situation closely.
