The Rock’s WrestleMania 40 Controversy Ignites Ticket Sales Surge Despite Fan Backlash

The Rock vs. Roman Reigns was originally planned for WrestleMania 39, but external factors prevented it from happening. The bout will essentially happen at WrestleMania this year and fans aren’t happy about it at all. Despite the backlash, WWE is having no problems selling tickets for their shows.

On last week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, The Rock confronted Roman Reigns, adding tension to the episode’s conclusion. Cody Rhodes brought in The Great One, as Rhodes simply gave up his WrestleMania 40 title shot, sparking outrage among fans.

Fans have been rallying for The Rock to give Cody Rhodes his WrestleMania 40 spot back as well, but nothing will change that. In fact, fans have started the ‘We Want Cody’ movement online and during shows, but that might not matter in the end.

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about the controversy surrounding The Rock. Meltzer noted that despite all the backlash WWE has been getting lately, it is clearly boosting ticket sales, as Meltzer used this week’s RAW as proof.

”Tonight’s show, a couple of days ago, they had 7600 tickets out, there are over 10,000 people there tonight. I mean you don’t move that many tickets from Friday to Monday ever, so whatever it is, people are buying this thing – they are paying to see it. I think there’s gonna be a ton of people that will be on Thursday.”

Fans made their voices heard during this week’s RAW, particularly in the Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes segment. The arena echoed with loud ‘Rocky Sucks’ chants, reminiscent of The Rock’s WWE debut in 1996. We will have to wait and see whether fan reactions will end up changing WWE’s plans for WrestleMania 40, as it seems unlikely right now.
