Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had his own show called ‘’Young Rock,’’ but the show ended up getting cancelled last year, shocking fans. While declining ratings were cited as the reason for the cancellation, it appears that may not be the actual reason.
NBC’s “Young Rock” is a television series focusing on the life and career of The Rock. Given The Rock’s challenging upbringing and experiences of poverty, many fans anticipated a deeply emotional and impactful show, similar to Eminem’s film “8 Mile.”
However, the series did not meet these expectations. It faced several issues and received frequent criticism, particularly for its casting choices. As previously noted, “Young Rock” was at serious risk of cancellation by NBC and was ultimately cancelled last year and declining ratings was cited as the reason for it getting axed.
In 2023, thousands of actors and writers in the United States went on strike over pay issues and concerns about artificial intelligence, giving birth to the SAG-AFTRA strike. During this period, “Young Rock” was canceled, a time when many people involved with the show were not working.
While speaking with Sportskeeda Wrestling Senior Editor Bill Apter, The Rock’s close friend Harvey Wippleman confirmed that the strike had a significant impact on the series. According to Wippleman, the cancellation was not due to ratings or other internal problems, but rather because of the Hollywood strike. As a result, production shifted towards dance, singing, and reality shows.
“The reason it ended wasn’t because of ratings. It wasn’t because of any issues. It was because the Hollywood writers and the actors all went on strike, so that show ended. Everything went to dance shows, singing shows, reality shows.”
The Rock has clearly moved on from the show getting cancelled but there remains some hope regarding the future of the show. Regardless, only time will tell if The Rock will get another show based on his life somewhere down the line.
What’s your view on this reasoning for ”Young Rock” getting cancelled? Do you believe the SAG-AFTRA strikes were what ended the show? Let us know in the comments section below!
