‘They are busy’: Dutch journalist says it’s ‘certain’ that United are on the hunt for Ten Hag’s successor

Ever since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s minority stake was ratified, one pressing issue has always come up in the media: whether Erik ten Hag will remain part of Manchester United’s project long-term. 

It’s a tale as old as time at Old Trafford. Bring in a new coach to try and restore the club to its former glories, like those witnessed under Sir Alex Ferguson, and cut their tenure short before they’ve even reached the end of a contract.

This time around, you could argue that the situation differs slightly given that Ratcliffe had no say in Ten Hag’s appointment, so wasn’t able to offer his input on whether he’s the man to take the reins.

The INEOS CEO is certainly the man with all the power now, though, and he’s already shown his desire to strike up a complete overhaul of the United hierarchy, with the likes of Dan Ashworth, Omar Berrada, Jason Wilcox joining his team or being heavily linked with imminent moves.

Ten Hag’s first season in the dugout undoubtedly gave him credit in the bank, but it must be running dangerously low now. A third-placed finish, a Carabao Cup trophy and reaching the FA Cup final marks an all-round successful maiden term for a manager at United.

Alas, it’s what’s followed that has thrown his job security up in the air. Out of the League Cup and Champions League by Christmas – after finishing rock-bottom of the group – while forever playing catch-up in the top-four race – a race United now look destined to lose given their 11-point distance.

ESPN’s Marciano Vink gave a damning verdict on the future of his compatriot, saying (via VoetbalPrimeur): “What is certain is that United is very much looking for a new coach, but they are orientating and also having conversations. They are busy.”
