Ange Postecoglou told reporters on Tuesday that it was unlikely Tottenham would bring in fresh faces before the end of the window despite being heavily linked with a move for the England international.

But despite Chelsea's willingness to generate pure profit from homegrown talent and balance the books amid concerns over Profit and Sustainability rules, Gallagher is likely to see the season out at Stamford Bridge.

Blues fans have made it clear they would be furious to see their vice captain sold, especially to the club's arch-rivals.

Newcastle showed interest in the 23-year-old during the summer transfer window but their hands were tied by Financial Fair Play restrictions.

The England star made clear his intention to stay and fight for his place at the club under new boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Gallagher has received increased game time since Pochettino’s arrival and has repaid the faith shown in him by the Argentine.

The midfielder is a boyhood Chelsea fan who has captained the club on multiple occasions this term has not angled for a move from west London.

But with just 18 months remaining on his existing deal, his future at the club remains unclear with Chelsea mulling over whether to cash in on the academy graduate.

The alternative is for the Blues to hand Gallagher a new bumper deal with the view that he will be the one of the club’s driving forces in Pochettino’s era.

If a solution has not been found by the end of the season then Spurs could be tempted to return with a lower bid as Gallagher enters the final 12 months of contract.
