The seven-time champion is joining Ferrari from Mercedes in a move that shocked the Formula 1 world with many joking the Italian team completed the best deal of deadline day, which Postecoglu picked up on.

"Probably the only disappointing one was yesterday, I thought there was a really good opportunity for us," he told the media.

"But the club just didn't feel it was the right move for us, so disappointed with that.

“But he ended up at Ferrari so we just have to cop it.

He let his words hang there for a split second to take in the stunned faces in front of him. "Look at you all! You were ready to type away.

“I was going to pause just to let his [press officer’s] phone blow up, but it was a good one, mate, a good one.

The manager was talking about the quieter than usual deadline day with teams reigning in their spending.

Shortly after, Postecoglou did reflect on his own side's dealings, as he spoke of his delight at the business they did that saw Timo Werner join on loan and Radu Dragusin arrive from Geona.

"With the absences from injury we’ve had and particularly having Sonny [Son Heung-min] away [at Asian Cup], the beauty of getting them in early is they’ve already made a contribution.

“If you leave it until the last day it still takes guys time to settle, but they’ve both settled in really well.

'With outgoings, we got some good loans.. With Alejo it's great for him to get game time at a good club. Also players like Ashley Phillips and Alfie Devine got good loans."
