EXCLUSIVE: Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Rose Byrne (Damages) is set to star in true-story Tow, which The Exchange and CAA Media Finance are launching ahead of this week’s EFM.
Tow will chart the true story of Amanda Ogle, a homeless Seattle woman who fought her way out of tow-company hell to reclaim her life and the car that held it all together after receiving a tow bill for $21,634. Ogle also serves as an executive producer on the film.
Stephanie Laing will direct. The Exchange, which reps international, will also serve as producers. CAA Media Finance will rep domestic.
The original screenplay is written by Jonathan Keasey, Brant Boivin, and Annie Weisman. The project marks a reunion for Byrne, Weisman and Laing, who recently worked together on Apple TV’s Physical.
Producers are Byrne, Laing, via her newly launched Cake or Death Pictures, Brent Stiefel and Justin Lothrop of Votiv Films (Obvious Child) and Brian O’Shea and Danyelle Foord of The Exchange (The Independent).
Executive producers include Jonathan Keasey, Jonathan Tropper (Irreplaceable You), Ogle, Josh Ricks, and Danny Gusman, Nat McCormick and Giovanna Trischitta of The Exchange. Casting is by Sherry Thomas at Bialy/Thomas.
“Amanda is a true champion and I’m thrilled to help bring her story of tenacity and perseverance to audiences, especially alongside my friends and collaborators Rose and Annie. Rose is the perfect artist to bring Amanda’s story to life”, said director Stephanie Laing.
“This project is very near and dear to my heart. There are superhero stories and then there are stories about real life heroes like Amanda,” added Brent Stiefel. “Amanda epitomizes the strength and perseverance that it takes to overcome insurmountable odds. We have an incredible team and I cannot wait for the world to see Amanda’s story unfold on the big screen”
Bridesmaids and Damages star Byrne has Ezra upcoming, in which she stars with Robert De Niro and Bobby Cannavale, and the second season of Apple TV+ original series Platonic, in which she re-teams with Seth Rogan. Byrne is repped by CAA and RGM Artists; Laing is repped by Artists First, CAA and Myman Greenspan Fineman Fox Rosenberg & Light; Weisman is repped by WME and Gendler, Kelly & Cunningham.
