WWE Chief Content Officer Triple H says doing good numbers on social media is just as drawing high television viewership figures.

The wrestling business has changed a lot, as television ratings aren’t as important in the evaluation of the success of a show due to metrics like social media traffic. WWE especially is known for pulling in strong numbers on socials.

Speaking on SI Media with Jimmy Traina, Triple H noted that good numbers on social media are just as good as high television ratings, as it’s just another way for people to watch if they were unable to catch something live.

“It is to me because the world today, people are so busy, if you didn’t catch it live and you’re a casual fan who doesn’t catch every single show and you don’t know that promo or match is taking place,” Triple H said. “Going back to Tiffany Stratton, they don’t know the cash in is happening that night.

“A lot of what we do is, you want to promote to people to get them to come, but you also want to surprise and give them something they didn’t expect and holy shit moments where they then go back and talk about it online. All that chatter online, that is water cooler talk that leads other people to go back and go, ‘Wow, I went and looked it up and saw that Seth Rollins and CM Punk promo, I’m going to tune in this week.’ That is the stuff that, over time, builds your ratings and numbers.”

Triple H On Not Booking To Pop Numbers

Triple H then said that he was not a big believer in doing something to pop a number. He noted this was not necessarily beneficial in the long term. He emphasized that it was important to build to other things and sell a story.

“I’m not a big believer in ‘We’re going to do this one thing and it’s going to pop a number.’ It’s great in the moment, but what does that do for you long term? It’s just a moment and it just lives within itself,” Triple H said. “If it’s not building to other things and not telling you the story, great storytelling is where we’re at. The other stuff is just sort of special effects. The moments are trailers for the product itself and if you get those trailers out there, people come into the product. Then, you have to hook them with characters and storylines.” (H/t Fightful)
