Barcelona youngster Hugo Alba is enjoying what is arguably the best season of his fledgeling career in youth football.
Firmly established as the starting striker for Barça’s Juvenil A setup under Juliano Belletti, the 18-year-old striker has repaid his coach’s trust in the best way possible – by scoring goals, and plenty of them.
No renewal talks yet
However, according to SPORT, despite his outstanding performances, Alba’s future remains uncertain. His contract expires on June 30, and as things stand, Barcelona have not yet made serious moves to secure his renewal.
As of mid-March, the teenage forward, who joined La Masia from Elche in 2019, has already netted 20 goals across all competitions, with 14 coming in the División de Honor Juvenil and four in the UEFA Youth League.
Even though his performances have been top-notch, the club have yet to open concrete negotiations for an extension.
Alba, for his part, is keen to continue at Barcelona and move up to Barça Atletic next season. He is also open to remaining at the club even if the reserve team is relegated to the Segunda RFEF.
Barcelona recently lost Unai Hernandez to Saudi Arabia and are likely to bid goodbye to Pau Prim, whose contract also expires at the end of the season. Now, Alba too could follow suit.
Given his goal-scoring ability, Alba is unlikely to struggle in finding a new club should Barcelona choose not to renew his contract. His impressive statistics make him a highly attractive prospect for clubs.
As such, with June fast approaching, the Blaugrana must soon decide whether to keep the prolific La Masia striker or not.
