The ambition of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to retain the number one seat of power in Ondo State has been causing a serious crisis in the Akeredolu’s family.
Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, the wife of the late governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has engaged in a verbal confrontation with her late husband’s niece, Funke Akeredolu-Aruna, over the latter’s support for incumbent Aiyedatiwa’s governorship aspiration.
In a recent social media post, Mrs. Akeredolu referred to her late husband’s niece as a “bloody serpent” for endorsing Governor Aiyedatiwa’s bid for the governorship ticket of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 16 poll.
Mrs. Akeredolu wrote, “Behold the face of Aketi’s niece, Funke Akeredolu Aruna, the former deputy chief protocol to Aketi, shamelessly parades as ‘I am lucky.’ Bloody serpent! Time will tell if she is truly lucky!”
Responding to the criticism, Akeredolu-Aruna explained that she was under attack from the former governor’s widow due to her political support for Governor Aiyedatiwa. She clarified her stance, stating:
“Mummy (Akeredolu’s wife) is fighting and attacking me now because she has her reason and she is not supporting the incumbent governor. I just happened to be a victim of circumstances with whatever that is happening.”
Akeredolu-Aruna emphasized her history of support for Governor Aiyedatiwa, mentioning her role as an assistant convener of Orimisan Lucky Women, a group supporting his re-election bid.
“I won’t back out from Lucky’s camp. I cannot see where there is light and follow darkness. All these things that are flying around the incumbent governor are pure lies because as a Christian I cannot pitch my tent with lies. I have my integrity and I hold it in high spirits,” she stated.
The rift between Mrs. Akeredolu and Aiyedatiwa began when Akeredolu fell ill before passing away at a German hospital on December 27.
