Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi
The Remo Committee on state creation from the old Ijebu province has submitted its report to the Akarigbo and Paramount ruler of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi demanding that the name of the new state should be Remo-Ijebu and Sagamu as capital.
This was contained in a document obtained by our Correspondent on Friday and signed by the committee Chairman, Aare Kola Oyefeso.
The committee argued that Remo people are quite distinctive to Ijebu, having migrated from Iremo Quarters in Ile Ife and will never allow its distinctiveness to be subjugated under any guise.
It noted that the request for state creation is unique, considering that Ogun East, also known as Ijebu Province, is the only province created before independence in 1960 yet to be established as a state.
The group said that it has consulted widely to arrive at its positions.
The committee equally demanded the creation of more local governments as there are facts and figures to justify this demand and to also accommodate the influx of people from the neighbouring Lagos State.
The communique partly reads, “The Remo people are distinctive from the ljebus, having migrated from Remo Quarters, Ile-Ife, and maintained contact with their roots.
“The memorandum emphasizes the Remo people’s unassailable position that any attempt to subjugate their identity in the proposed state will not be acceptable.
“Empirical data supports the siting of the capital in Sagamu, considering the exponential growth and developments in Remo-Land over the last three decades.
“The issue of making Remo-Land or Sagamu the commercial capital is already settled by providence and doesn’t require any further endorsement”.
Oyefeso called on Governor Dapo Abiodun and the Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, to support the desire of the Remo people and allow posterity to judge them well in the fullness of time.
