Vietnamese distributor and producer Mockingbird Pictures is making its debut as an international sales agent at Filmart with a slate of local horror, comedies and action films, headed by record-breaking horror hit Crimson Snout (Quy Cau).
Produced by 89s Group, the film is currently the highest-grossing horror film ever in Vietnam with a take of around $4.5M since its January release.
Directed by Luu Thanh Luan, the film is based on an urban legend in Vietnam in which a white dog with a red nose transforms into a devil at midnight bringing a string of bad luck and consecutive deaths to an innocent family.
Mockingbird’s debut slate also includes comedy horror Betting With Ghost, starring Tuan Tran, whose credits include Tran Thanh Town and CJ HK Entertainment’s family drama Mai, which became Vietnam’s highest-grossing film of all time over the recent Lunar New Year holidays.
Directed by Nguyen Nhat Trung, Betting With Ghost tells the story of a man who suddenly becomes a ‘God of Gamblers’ thanks to the help of a ghost. The film is scheduled for Vietnamese theatrical release on September 2, 2024.
Two other upcoming titles on Mockingbird’s slate are drama My Husband’s Secret Mistress, directed by Nguyen Ngoc Lam and starring Thai Hoa (Blood Moon Party), and Tran Nhan Kien’s family drama The Black Sheep, about a young man who dreams of being a director but is under pressure to take over his father’s moon cake shop. My Husband’s Secret Mistress is scheduled for local release on April 26 and The Black Sheep in early September.
Mockingbird is also selling action comedy Hustler Vs Scammer, directed by Vo Thanh Hoa, one of the biggest hits at the Vietnamese box office last year, grossing $15.6M.
Mockingbird’s Head of International Business Han Ly, International Sales Manager Ha Nguyen and Manager of International Business Phong Duong are attending Filmart to introduce the slate.
One of Vietnam’s leading independent distributors, Mockingbird releases around 25 films a year, including Thai, Korean, Japanese and U.S. titles, such as Saw X, Takashi Shimizu’s Sana and recent Thai horror hit Tee Yod.
The company is also involved in production and is selling its 2018 production, crime thriller Murder In The Lens, at Filmart.
