Viggo Mortensen opened up about all things Lord of the Rings related in a series of recent interviews.

The 65-year-old star famously played Aragorn alongside Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and more stars in the original trilogy of movies.

He revealed how well the cast did at keeping in touch, recalling one of the last times that they all communicated. Viggo even weighed in on reprising his role in a future LotR movie and revealed a surprising way that he repurposed one of his props from the franchise.

While on SiriusXM’s The Jess Cagle Show with Julia Cunningham, Viggo explained that the cast does make an effort to maintain contact all these years later.

“I think the other guys, which are much more social media savvy than I am, they may have more things, and I know they go to conventions and do lots of things involved in that universe, but we stay in touch,” he said. “We just lost one of our best friends, Bernard Hill, who played King Théoden, who appears first and the second and the third. Great actor, really good friend. And we all communicated about him. That’s been our most recent communication. So several of us do stay in touch. It’s really nice.”

During the interview, he added that “of course” he’d be “open” to playing Aragorn again in the future.

“It’d be great to revisit that universe. But I don’t know how that would happen exactly. Of course I’m open to it,” he explained.

Speaking to British GQ, he was asked if he’d be back for the new spinoff movie The Hunt for Gollum.

“I don’t know exactly what the story is, I haven’t heard. Maybe I’ll hear about it eventually,” he told the outlet. “I like playing that character. I learned a lot playing the character. I enjoyed it a lot. I would only do it if I was right for it in terms of, you know, the age I am now and so forth. I would only do it if I was right for the character. It would be silly to do it otherwise.”

During the conversation, he also confirmed that he reused Aragorn’s sword Andúril in his new movie The Dead Don’t Hurt. How did that happen?

Viggo explained that he was building out a fantasy scene in the movie and pulling together all of the props when he realized a sword would be a good addition.

“We had everything for this sequence with a knight. We had found this great, spirited horse, the right kind of saddle, and we made a medieval kind of blanket, and we had the costume for the knight,” he recalled. “Everything was right, and then I said, well, we should have a sword. And I did look and there were some good ones and I thought, well, it might be kind of good to use [Aragorn’s sword] that I had because it’s really good. But I knew I would have to ask permission because I’m sure somebody would notice it, even if you only see it for a few seconds, it’s not really essential to the scene and certainly not to the movie, it’s just something in passing that you either see or you don’t.”

He continued, saying, “I did ask Peter Jackson [LotR director] if he’d be all right with it, and he said, ‘Well, is it very important in the story?’ I said, no, it’s not, actually. You hardly notice it, but somebody will, probably. He said it was okay with him but that I should ask the movie company. So I contacted them and they were fine with it. They realized it wasn’t essential, it wasn’t going to draw a lot of attention to itself. And they were very nice about it, and they gave us permission. That’s why we did it, just because it seemed right. It was kind of a last-minute accident.”
