New Manchester United assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy is excited to return to Old Trafford for the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season.

The former Netherlands striker was my hero growing up. He played for United between 2001 and 2006, scoring an astonishing 150 goals in 219 appearances and completed the clean sweep of domestic trophies.

That said, I do believe Van Nistelrooy was misfortunate not to enjoy more success during his time at United. I remember being gutted when he left for Real Madrid but Ferguson knew the future would be bright with Cristiano Ronaldo on the wings.

Van Nistelrooy returned to Manchester over the summer, as one of Erik ten Hag’s two assistant managers, along with former Go Ahead Eagles manager Rene Hake.

Speaking to club media about the first game of the new season against Fulham, Van Nistelrooy revealed he is excited to walk through the Old Trafford tunnel and wave towards a packed Stretford End again.

“I can’t wait to walk through that tunnel again and meet Old Trafford, sold out again, and have a little wave at the Stretford End,” Van Nistelrooy told club media, as quoted by ManUtd.com.

“That brings back the memories and a good vibe, you know, for the lads hopefully to get a good start to the season.”

The former Netherlands international revealed that he is happy to be back working at a club he proudly represented as a player.

“It’s special to be back, to be fair,” he added.

“I mean, when United first came in with the opportunity to become assistant manager, it was fantastic.

“I never thought of it, but when it occurred, it was something that I couldn’t refuse, with the role that I was going to fill.

“Of course, then [I was] flying into Manchester, [seeing] Carrington and Old Trafford and town and how much changed and how much is still the same. So it’s special. It’s very special to be back.”
