A source told The Sun: "Punditry is one of a number of options open to Wayne for the future.
"He worked alongside Gary and co at the Euros last summer, and was a huge hit with viewers.
“He’s also eminently likeable with a forensic knowledge and love of the game.
“Match of the Day and a couple of other broadcasters are interested in having him on their programming.
“Wayne and the BBC are in early stage negotiations but it is looking promising and he is taking some time to work out exactly what he wants to do next”.
It comes after the BBC confirmed three new presenters for Match Of The Day from next season.
Kelly Cates, Gabby Logan and Mark Chapman will take on the role after Gary Lineker confirmed he would depart his role in November.
The trio will split hosting duties across Match of the Day, MOTD: Champions League, and Match of the Day 2.
"We are all friends and we've known each other for a long time and that's a really lovely part of it," said Cates, who will also continue to work for Sky Sports.

It's a great set-up."
Regular pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards will continue working on the show, while Rooney will be hoping to join them.
Rooney will be hoping to step back into management at some point in the future as he looks to prove himself after disappointing spells as boss of Derby County, Birmingham City and Plymouth.
With Everton appointing David Moyes as boss, talkSPORT's chief football correspondent Alex Crook even tipped Rooney to head back to Goodison Park as part of his backroom team.
