One year ago, the San Diego Wave were coming off of an NWSL Shield-winning season and looked poised for sustained success.

Today, San Diego looks nothing like the team that entered preseason a year ago following major overhauls on and off the field. To call it a “rebuild” would be generous – and it has sparked understandable concern among one of the NWSL’s larger fan bases.

“Ultimately, this is an offseason of a lot of change, and I think that change is often really important for a team’s evolution,” Wave FC sporting director and general manager Camille Ashton told The Equalizer. “And this year, obviously, probably [had] more change than you would typically see, but there were also a lot of factors that contributed to that.”
