Former Kano State Governor Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has expressed concern over the ongoing emirship dispute in Kano State but has chosen not to get involved.

The emirate tussle involves two main camps- Emir Muhammad Sanusi II backed by the State Government led by Governor Abba Yusuf and the dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero who was appointed by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

Speaking on Channels TV’s ‘Politics Today’, Shekarau attributed the crisis to political interference and hoped for a swift resolution.

He emphasized his deep connection to Kano, stating, “I am a very senior member of the emirate council and a former governor. Since the matter went to court, I decided not to discuss or interfere, regardless of the circumstances.”

Shekarau acknowledged that the situation is troubling for him as a Kano native who desires peace in the state. He also stressed the importance of the traditional institution in maintaining harmony, adding that if politicians had refrained from interfering, the crisis might have been avoided.

Shekarau highlighted the need for cooperation between political leaders and traditional institutions, citing his own experience working closely with the Emir of Kano during his tenure as governor. “There has to be a synergy of understanding,” he said, underscoring the potential for collaboration to resolve conflicts.
