Barcelona’s decision to sack Xavi Hernandez was impulsive but it was always coming, given the growing distrust between the management and the coach.
A recent report from Alex Pintanel has offered key details regarding the urgent meeting that took place between Xavi and the rest of the management, where the coach was informed of the club’s decision.
The report adds that there was no real tension between the two parties during the meeting and it went rather smoothly.
Xavi renounces his salary
Barcelona’s main concern, of course, was the remuneration that Xavi was entitled to, given the fact that the club are essentially breaking the contract one year earlier.
However, Pintanel reports that Xavi informed Barcelona of his decision to let go of his salary for the remainder of his contract. He only demanded the salary of his coaching staff and assistants.
As per the report, this served as a huge relief for Barcelona, saving them a fee of around €12 million, which they would have had to pay otherwise.
Xavi, for his part, simply wanted a clearer picture of his future at the club and appear to hold no grudge against the club’s management.
The Spaniard did not want to head into the pre-match presser against Sevilla without knowing his future. Even his coaching staff were relieved at Barcelona’s decision, feeling a sense of freedom.
Barcelona, meanwhile, will be grateful to Xavi for his decision to renounce his salary, which could go a long way in helping them fund move for Hansi Flick.
The German is all set to replace Xavi Hernandez as the Barcelona head coach and could be officiated as soon as next week.
