Ajax have been one of the biggest disappointments in Dutch football this season.
Widely regarded as one of the favourites to win any competition in the Netherlands, the club are languishing in fifth place, with no real hopes of sealing the Eredivisie title.
Naturally, such a poor season could mean a summer of change ahead, with Ajax already looking for a new coach.
In fact, the Dutch giants have been recently linked with a move for none other than Xavi Hernandez, who is set to leave Camp Nou at the end of the season.
Ajax also want Jordi Cruyff
A recent report from SPORT has offered an update on Ajax, suggesting that the Eredivisie giants are also interested in hiring Jordi Cruyff.
Jordi Cruyff was quite influential at Barcelona (Photo by David Ramos/Getty Images)Cruyff had served as Barcelona’s sporting director between 2022 to 2023. Under his leadership, the club were notably able to sign multiple stars in the market, including Robert Lewandowski.
Cruyff also played a pivotal role in leading Barcelona out of economic turmoil. Although the situation has not improved greatly, Barça are in a much better place than they were a few years ago.
Ajax’s plan for next season
As per the report, Ajax’s plan is to sign Jordi Cruyff as a sporting director in the coming summer while bringing in Xavi Hernandez as the head coach.
It appears the Dutch club want to recreate the roles Xavi and Cruyff had at Barcelona last season when the Catalans notably secured the league title.
Ajax are hoping that Xavi and Cruyff can work in tandem to restore the glory days of the club in the years to come.
Barcelona, though, are not ready to let go of Xavi just yet, with club president Joan Laporta among the personalities who are keen on convincing the Spaniard to reverse his decision to leave Camp Nou this summer.
