Andre Onana joined the club last summer as David de Gea’s replacement after the Spaniard’s 12-year stay at the club came to an end.

Expectations were high, with Onana widely regarded as one of Europe’s leading goalkeepers when he made his move from Inter Milan.

A tough start to life in Manchester was, however, also widely documented as the Cameroon international struggled to adapt to a new team.

Onana’s slump lasted for more than a couple of games and before you knew it, he was already being branded as the latest failed transfer at Old Trafford. Thankfully, he has recovered from that period brilliantly well and is now one of United’s most consistent players.

Speaking recently, the former Ajax and Barcelona player has admitted that those early struggled did make him question whether joining the club was the right move for him but that there are no doubts now as his first year at the club comes to an end.

“When I look back now I am just smiling because it was a big lesson for me,” Onana told MUTV, via the Manchester Evening News about those first couple of months.

“In the beginning I was like, ‘Wow, did I make the right choice?’ but I’m definitely 100 per cent sure I made the right choice because Manchester United is the biggest club in this country and one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“I hope I have the answer but football is not like mathematics, one plus one is two. It’s not always the best players who win, there’s always a lot of ups and downs, you just have to deal with the situation and we have to deal with the situation.

“We have faced a terrible season, for me, personally, and as a group as well. I don’t think my teammates are happy with the situation we are facing. I know them, they are all winners, everyone wants to win, before the season we spoke about fighting for every single title.

“Things happen in life and you have to deal with the situation. We have a beautiful final to play and another few games to play so we will go for it.”

Onana is part of a small group of players at the club that simply cannot be let go this summer, with United expected to almost completely overhaul the squad if the financials allow it.
