Manchester United are reportedly planning a squad overhaul this summer as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his new football operations team set out their plans to bring success back to England’s greatest club.
According to David McDonnell of The Mirror, 12 players could be on their way out this summer, which is something that will please a lot of fans who are fed up of watching underperforming stars each week.
The club will be operating under limitations imposed by financial fair play regulations, however, we now have co-owners who want to invest in the squad and bring success on the pitch. It will take time but an overhaul may be required.
It is suggested that every position within the team will be reevaluated by new technical director Jason Wilcox as well as the incoming sporting director (Dan Ashworth once Newcastle take him off gardening leave).
In defence, where there has been an injury crisis throughout the season, we can expect several players to leave. I’m looking at the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire.
The midfield also appears poised for transformation. We all know that the days are numbered for Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, despite the positive influence both midfielders had on the team last season when United won the Carabao Cup and finished third in the Premier League. Their legs have gone.
Scott McTominay was linked with a move away from United last summer, but he has shown his importance to the squad this season at times Ten Hag needed him most. It remains to be seen if the club will look to cash in on the Scotland international.
Additionally, Sofyan Amrabat can forget about staying at Old Trafford because the Moroccan has been nowhere near good enough.
There is uncertainty over the future of Antony, who has failed to perform consistently since his mega-money move from Ajax, so United may consider taking a hit on the Brazilian. Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho are also mentioned as possible departures.
Rashford has sparked a lot of debate with his underwhelming performances this season. The forward scored 30 goals last season, but many feel a big decision needs to be made on his future. We shouldn’t forget that he agreed bigger and better terms with the club last year!
