After a disappointing defeat to Villarreal last week, Xavi sent shockwaves through the football world by announcing his departure from Barcelona pre-emptively.

The Barça manager and legend confirmed that he is set to part ways with the Catalan giants come the end of the season, which has sparked an array of rumours about potential coaches entrusted to take over the helm.

Barcelona eyeing Gallardo

Now, according to Cadena SER (h/t BOLAVIP), one of the options emerging as Xavi’s replacement at Barcelona is none other than Marcelo Gallardo, a figure who is widely renowned for his work with River Plate and currently plies his trade at Saudi Club Al-Ittihad.

As per the information, it appears that he signed an 18-month contract with a termination clause in case a bid from a European heavyweight was submitted.

This would make it easier for Barcelona to acquire his services in the event they deem him fit for the role of head coach. At the moment, Gallardo is among the two candidates who most strongly appeal to Joan Laporta.

Following Ronald Koeman’s sacking, Laporta was tempted to back Marcelo Gallardo instead of Xavi, not solely because of his experience with River Plate but also because of his distinct management style and ability to perform well under pressure, which is essential while dealing with the massive expectations in Catalonia.

But things did not pan out, although the Barcelona president continues to admire the Argentine tactician.

Deco searching far and wide

Although Laporta fancies Gallardo, Barcelona sporting director Deco is in charge of surveying Xavi’s successor.

As such, the Portuguese is keeping his options open, having reportedly inquired about Hansi Flick and Sergio Conceicao already.

The season is long, and it remains to be seen how the Catalans’ priorities develop.

For now, Gallardo joins a long list of potential replacements, including Jurgen Klopp, Thiago Motta, Michel, Imanol Alguacil, Hansi Flick, Sergio Conceicao, and even Barça Atletic boss Rafa Marquez.
