Alejandro Balde’s hamstring injury sustained against Athletic Club during Barcelona’s 2-4 loss in the Copa del Rey tie forced him to undergo surgery, prompting him to eventually miss the rest of the season.
In a follow-up to the aforementioned event, Spanish publication SPORT has mentioned that the 20-year-old successfully underwent surgery on Tuesday in Finland and while he will not be available for Barcelona this season, he could play for Spain at the UEFA Euro.
“Alejandro Balde has undergone successful surgery on the injury to the hamstring tendon in his right thigh,” read a statement from FC Barcelona.
“This intervention was carried out by Dr. Lasse Lempainen, under the supervision of the Club’s medical services, in Turku (Finland). It is low and his evolution will determine his availability,” it continued.
National commitment possible but not certain
Balde’s participation in the upcoming Euros this summer is uncertain. Although the tournament spans from June 14 to July 14, the prospect is plausible as long as his recovery progresses without any setbacks.

“I spoke to him the other day. He is strong (mentally), which is very important, but of course, he will be out for several months… He will return before the Euros soon,” said the head coach.
Meanwhile, as far as Barcelona are concerned, Xavi will have to navigate the remainder of the season without the availability of Balde. This adds to the challenges in the left lane, compounded by the absence of Marcos Alonso, who recently underwent surgery for lower back issues.
Currently, the team is relying on Joao Cancelo and Hector Fort, both natural right-backs, to compensate for the void on the left side. Despite a few notable errors by Cancelo in the recent match against Villarreal, the overall results have been more than acceptable.
