Borussia Dortmund are considering a move for Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, who spent this season on loan at Getafe.
The Bundesliga outfit are the latest club to be linked with a move for Greenwood this summer.
Greenwood, 22, is expected to return to Old Trafford this summer following a temporary loan spell at La Liga side Getafe. He scored 8 goals in 33 league appearances and was named their player of the season.
However, the former England international isn’t likely to play for the club again. His last appearance came in a 1-0 Premier League win against West Ham at Old Trafford in January 2022. A week later, Greenwood was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault after photographic and audible footage emerged on social media. United immediately suspended the youngster from first-team duties including training and matches.
In February 2023, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against Greenwood due to “a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.” An internal investigation from United followed but the club eventually decided that it would be best for Greenwood to continue his career elsewhere.
Greenwood moved to Getafe where he has been able to get on with his career, but where does he go next?
Juventus and Atletico Madrid have also been linked with a move for Greenwood. Now Dortmund have emerged as a possible destination for the forward, who has one-year left to run on his United contract.
According to ESPN, United will trigger a one-year extension on Greenwood’s contract if he leaves on loan again this summer in order to increase his market value.
There would be significant backlash if United were to take Greenwood back. A lot of fans feel he’s more trouble than what he’s worth and I, for one, side with that.
Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl was quizzed on the Greenwood rumour at the club’s Champions League final media day ahead of Saturday’s Wembley final against Real Madrid.
“I don’t want to talk about any rumours now at the moment because it makes no sense,” Kehl said, as per The Mirrror. “Let’s play that final on Saturday.
“Of course we do have our plans for the next season and of course we discuss many scenarios, but nothing for today. Let’s focus, let’s anticipate that match on Saturday and then we’ll see how we move on.”
