This might be the most honest we’ve ever heard Prince William get about this terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year.
Per People, the Prince of Wales spoke with reporters on Thursday while in Cape Town, South Africa, for his Earthshot Prize awards ceremony. Getting super candid about what it has been like to deal with his wife Princess Catherine‘s cancer diagnosis at the same time as his father King Charles III also battles the disease, William shared:
“It’s been dreadful. It’s probably been the hardest year in my life. So, trying to get through everything else and keep everything on track has been really difficult.”
Oof. We cannot even imagine. It’s hard enough helping ONE loved one through cancer treatment — let alone dealing with TWO family members going through the same thing. All while caring for three young children and being one of the only senior royal family members left standing. Talk about a lot of pressure!

As Perezcious readers know, both Kate and the King discovered they had unidentified forms of cancer around the same time. The 75-year-old was first to announce his diagnosis in February after having a prostate procedure. Kate kept hers quiet — but eventually announced her diagnosis the following month after fans noticed she hadn’t been seen publicly since the holidays — and conspiracy theories about her whereabouts started to get out of hand. She eventually revealed her cancer news and retreated back out of the spotlight, for the most part, during her treatment.
Given all this context, it’s easy to see why this was such a “dreadful” year for the prince, who went on to praise his wife and father for how they’ve dealt with these health scares. He expressed:
“I’m so proud of my wife, I’m proud of my father, for handling the things that they have done. But from a personal family point of view, it’s been, yeah, it’s been brutal.”
When asked more specifically how the the mother of three is doing since finishing chemo in September, Will said she’s “doing well.” As for the Prince?? He’s actually shocked the reporters thought he looked relaxed these days:
“I couldn’t be less relaxed this year, so it’s very interesting you’re all seeing that.”
Hah! Guess he’s just very convincing when he puts on a brave face in public!
Despite still feeling stressed, William is prioritizing his family time as best as he can right now, he continued:
“But it’s more a case of just crack on and you’ve got to keep going. I enjoy my work and I enjoy pacing myself and keeping sure that I have got time for my family, too.”
Keep calm and carry on, that’s what the Brits do best, right?
We’re sure this experience has been life-altering for the family in so many ways, but it must also be a relief to get close to the year-mark knowing Kate has concluded her treatment already. While Charles is still under medical care, he’s been able to travel and is looking at going even more places next year, so that is also a positive sign! We hope 2025 is a lot less “brutal” for them all!
