Another popular social media app is going dark in the United States alongside TikTok. If you haven’t been keeping track, a new law passed last year mandated that TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance sell off ownership by January 19, 2025. If it did not, the social media platform had to be removed from the App Store. ByteDance has refused to sell the app, which means that the ban is going into effect. Unfortunately, TikTok isn’t the only platform that ByteDance owns. The company is also the parent of the video editing service CapCut, which suspended its service shortly before the clock struck midnight January 19. Keep reading to find out more… “Sorry, CapCut isn’t available right now,” the app’s landing page reads. “A new law banning CapCut has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can’t use CapCut for now. Rest assured, we’re working to restore our service in the U.S. Please stay tuned! In the meantime, you can still manage your account data.” As recently as this week, USA Today noted that it was unclear if CapCut would also be impacted by the law targeting TikTok. However, it appears that the answer is clear – CapCut, along with TikTok, will be unavailable to U.S. users for the foreseeable future. Mere days before the ban was to go into effect, the Supreme Court denied a request to hear a case repealing the law. However, Donald Trump has signaled that he is interested in reassessing the situation once he is sworn into office on Monday (January 20).
