Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann doesn’t agree with Bayern Munich’s decision to cash in on Matthijs de Ligt.

The Netherlands international completed his move to United on Tuesday and is in line to make his debut against Fulham on Friday night when the 2024/25 Premier League campaign kicks-off.

De Ligt’s transfer to United sees him reunite with his former Ajax manager Erik ten Hag, with who he played his best football, prior to moves to Juventus and Bayern Munich.

However, Hamann has warned the Bundesliga giants that they’re losing a leader in the team.

It turns out Bayern’s new manager Vincent Kompany doesn’t share the same view as Hamann since he gave the green light to sell the centre-back this summer.

“I wouldn’t have given him up,” Hamann said when asked about the transfer, as cited by FCB Inside.

“He wasn’t always able to match his performance at Ajax in Turin or Munich, but for me he was the most stable central defenders at Bayern in the last six to eight months.

“He is someone who opens his mouth and makes his players better. I don’t see that with the other central defenders. For me, De Ligt would have been set.”

It bodes well that someone who watches a lot of German football thinks this is a good signing for United, while Tim Sherwood thinks De Ligt has ‘lost his way’.

I, for one, have every confidence in De Ligt being a good signing if he can stay fit. The same applies to all of our new signings.
