Manchester United are currently in talks with goalkeeper Tom Heaton as they look to retain him despite his contract coming to an end today.

According to a report from Manchester Evening News, the 38-year-old goalkeeper is in discussions with the Premier League club about a retainment, and it will be interesting to see if both parties can come to an agreement.

Heaton did not get any game time at Manchester United last season, and it remains to be seen whether he is ready to sign an extension with the club, despite the lack of playing opportunities. He is unlikely to start for Manchester United next season as well.

However, he could be a useful squad option for the Red Devils. They need depth in their squad and the 38-year-old would be ideal.

Man United clear out as free agents depart

Meanwhile, players like Jonny Evans, Brandon Williams, and Anthony Martial are leaving the club upon the expiry of their contract as well.

The departure of these players will free up the wage bill and it will be interesting to see if the Red Devils can bring in the necessary additions this summer. They will need to improve their squad in order to compete with the top clubs next season.

Manchester United had an underwhelming season by the standards last year and they missed out on Champions League qualification. Despite winning the FA Cup trophy, a club of their stature is expected to do better.

It will be interesting to see if they can cut out the weaknesses from their squad and bounce back strongly next season.
