England manager Gareth Southgate will name his final 26-man squad for Euro 2024 on Saturday 8 June. It remains to be seen how many Manchester United players will be involved after Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo all made the 33-man provisional squad.

There was no place in the England squad for Marcus Rashford, leading to more headlines and hot takes from former footballers turned pundits. The way I see it is, Rashford didn’t perform this season and other players are more deserving of a spot in the England squad.

Then we’ve got Maguire and Shaw, who both missed the end of the season for United due to injury. Southgate says he has been ‘pleased with the progress’ they have made ahead of the European Championships.

Maguire and Shaw linked up with England early in a bid to prove their fitness as they continue their recovery from muscle injuries that have kept them out for a month and three months respectively.

The United duo are set to miss England’s friendly matches against Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Iceland.

“All are progressing well, so we’re pleased with the progress they’ve made,” Southgate said (via Daily Mail) of Maguire, Shaw and Newcastle winger Anthony Gordon.

“None of them will be involved tomorrow.

“I think Anthony has a good chance to be available for Friday. The other two a bit more unlikely, but we will just see how quickly they can go really.

“Same tomorrow for Bukayo (Saka), probably the same with John Stones. Everybody else will be involved.

“Just because he reported a bit later, so he hasn’t worked with us for the number of days so better for him to follow an individual programme for the next couple of days.

“Bukayo is fine, he’s progressing well but the periodisation we’ve taken from his injury is to rest tomorrow and then he should be available for Friday.”
